Taking Puppy Mill Cruelty to Court!
Source: The Animals' Advocate Fall 2024 published by Animal Legal Defense Fund.
When California enacted the first statewide retail pet sale ban to combat puppy mill cruelty, some puppy mills found ways around it. An Iowa puppy mill broker, JAK's Puppies, set up fake rescues to "launder" mill-bred puppies, transporting them to California and selling them as high-priced "rescue dogs" in pet stores. This scheme deceived consumers who thought they were adopting animals in need, unknowingly supporting the puppy mill industry.
Subject Enterprises, a transport company for JAK’s Puppies, is facing legal action after numerous incidents where puppies in its care were injured, sick, or even killed. The company allegedly attempted to deliver contagious puppies to pet stores, posing a risk to families. Alongside a lawsuit, ALDF has filed a complaint with the USDA, urging the agency to investigate and revoke Subject Enterprises’ animal transport license.
The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), with support from the public, is pursuing a class-action lawsuit against JAK’s Puppies and others involved in the puppy laundering scheme. The case, which includes a RICO claim, represents puppy guardians who were deceived. ALDF and class-action firm Smith & Lowney PLLC are leading the representation for the plaintiffs.
